Organisation

Good record keeping is necessary to avoid wastage of film and time. Complete stock records ensure an adequate supply of raw stock and enable us to efficiently use short ends. If we have good records, we can know that for example, we have a 300 ft (100 metre) short end available to print a roll that is 280 ft long and not have to start a new roll and create another short end. Printing records should be completed so that it is possible to check on settings used on the machine in case of queries.

Communication

Communication with other departments is needed to make sure that the laboratory functions efficiently.

Communication involves referring problems to the grader, but also making sure that cans of film are labelled with all the information that the processing department requires.

We also have to consider that the quality checking will need information about the can.

We must put the Title of the film, the number of the reel, the type of stock, whether the film is silent, mute or sound, the gauge size, special information about format and most importantly, any requirements by the grader regarding development instructions for time, gamma and the correct bath.

Mechanical failures of machines should be reported to the maintenance department, as should all defects on the machine.

To avoid wastage of film stock we must discuss with the grader if we feel that a film will not run on a particular printing machine or if we feel that the instructions we have received are incorrect.
