MANNINGTREE

AND MISTLEY

The people, the trades, and industries

past and present

by

David Cleveland

The town of Manningtree and the village of Mistley in North Essex are busy places, one with a variety of shops and services, the other with industry and shipping. The histories of the two places have been closely intertwined, and today it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Situated by the tidal estuary of the River Stour, with fine views across to Suffolk fields and woodland, Manningtree and Mistley are magical places. This book takes a gentle look at these two places, with fragments of history, stories of the past, and the life and work of Manningtree and Mistley today.

MANNINGTREE AND MISTLEY is a new, updated, added to, and revised edition of a book first published in 2007.

With over one hundred and sixty new photographs, both old and new, and a tour of Manningtree and Mistley noting the shops and businesses, this new version records what life in Manningtree and Mistley is like today, with more stories and information of past industries and present people.
